4. Plan Your First Dance (And Beyond!)
The first dance is a moment everyone looks forward to. Make sure you’ve chosen a song that means something to you both and get it to your band or DJ well in advance for rehearsal. If they can't accommodate it, you can always play the song from a recording.
Once your first dance ends, don’t let the momentum drop—have the next song ready to keep the dance floor packed! A high-energy track immediately after your first dance can help shift the focus and get your guests back on their feet.
5. Engage Guests Outside the Dance Floor
While dancing is the main event for many, some guests may not want to spend the whole evening on the floor. Consider offering alternative entertainment at different points during the day:
- Interactive Games: Have a fun trivia game about the couple, a photo booth with props, or even a wedding scavenger hunt to engage guests in a relaxed way.
- Late-Night Snacks: Around midnight, surprise your guests with comfort food like mini burgers, fries, or a pizza station. This keeps them energised and engaged, and the snacks add a fun element to the night.
- Social Media Engagement: Encourage guests to share their favourite moments by creating a custom hashtag (#SmithWedding2025, for example) for them to post on Instagram, Twitter, and other platforms. Display the hashtag at the venue to remind guests to get involved.
- Add a Chill-Out Zone: Some guests might prefer a more low-key environment. Create a cosy, quiet lounge area with comfortable seating, soft lighting, and ambient music where they can relax, chat, and recharge without leaving the venue.
6. Get the Most Out of Your Entertainment
If you’re hiring a live band, ask if they can play during other parts of your day—such as for your ceremony or the drinks reception. Acoustic music while your guests arrive or while you take your wedding photos adds an elegant touch. Plus, a live performance during dinner or cocktails can be a great ice-breaker.
7. Final Arrangements: A Smooth Set-Up
Make sure your band or DJ has all the details they need for a seamless performance. Assign a point of contact at the venue (perhaps your wedding planner or the best man) who can help the band or DJ settle in and direct them to the right space.
Also, if you're hosting your reception in the same room as dinner, try to time their setup with the room turnaround to minimize disruption. This way, guests won’t be distracted by sound-checks, and your entertainment can be a fun surprise.
